At the General Election in Dundee West on 5th May 2005, 36936 votes were cast (approximately 56% of the total number of eligible voters) with the following result:

James McGovern (Labour): 16468 votes (-5.7%).

Joe Fitzpatrick (Scottish National Party): 11089 votes (+2.2%).

Nykoma Garry (Liberal Democrat): 5323 votes (+5.2%).

Christopher McKinlay (Conservative): 3062 votes (-0.6%).
